Broadford Distillery, Rathad na h-Atha
Broadford, IV49 9AB

The actual distillery is located in the village of Broadford, in the southwest of Skye. The village of Broadford itself is the second largest settlement in Skye after Portree. It is located in the south end of the island, next to the main arterial road, the A87, connecting all of Skye to Inverness.

WHERE ARE WE GOING

OUR PROJECT

Gaelic musician Séamus Ó Baoighill and master distiller Seumas Gorman now want to demolish their current distillery and visitor centre and replace it with a four-storey whisky hub.

They hope to put their own spin on distilling Skye whisky while taking inspiration from the village’s centuries old whisky story.

A public café and bar area will be split across two floors, giving visitors a view into the new distillery with pot stills as large as the current complex.

The production facility would allow the existing business to become a whisky distiller and to recreate the Corry Distillery, an historic whisky brand which was produced from 1816 to 1826 in Broadford

WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO

The plans include the demolition of the existing single storey 100sqm Broadford Distillery building. It currently runs as a small scale craft distillery and visitor centre, with the remaining site unused. The replacement distillery will provide a larger commercially viable production facility; visitor centre with a cafe/ bar provision and associated back of house; staff accommodation and parking.

The new broadford distillery is located on the north west section of the site. Fronting Ford road and replacing the existing building placement, allowing the distillery to announce its presence whilst also maintaining separation between existing commercial and residential properties. The existing loading bay facilitates deliveries and the collection of waste with these activities restricted to the industrial west side or to a lesser degree the lower ground level. The distillery and visitor centre building is separated from the staff accommodation units by an open courtyard. This allows the accommodation building to fit in with the grain of the existing housing development that runs up Riverside Road.

The scale and form of the new buildings are designed to ensure the visibility of the publicly accessible building whilst concentrating this two and a half storey element towards the rising ground of the industrial estate, and stepping down towards the inner edges of the site and to respect existing buildings and their function. There are other two and a half storey buildings close by fronting Ford Road, housing Skye Candles and the pharmacy.

OUR PLANS

The proposal sits at the end of the commercial frontage on Ford Road offering the opportunity to create a stop-end to the public area whilst improving the existing distillery capacity and visitor attractions along Ford Road, within the centre that encourages public routes of travel. The scale of the building also allows it to create a place marker for the edge of Broadford as mentioned in the development plan.
